June a good month for Nevada anglers
Based on the three state-record fish that were caught during June, it appears that it just may be the best of months to wet a line.
Mark Warren, Nevada Department of Wildlife staff biologist who manages the state's Trophy Fish Program, said two catches made in June have been officially recognized as state records. Another will go into the record book as soon as he receives an entry form from the angler who caught the fish.
The two official state records were caught at Big Ben State Park, along the Colorado River below Laughlin.
On June 14, a bluegill weighing two pounds, three ounces was caught at Laughlin Lagoon by Mike Scott of Laughlin. It was 13 1/2 inches long and eclipsed the previous state record by two ounces.
Bill Condon of Bullhead City, Ariz., caught a redear sunfish at Boy Scout Cove on June 26 that tipped the scales at two pounds, five ounces and was 13 3/4 inches. The fish, which was caught with a crappie crawdad jig, was 13 ounces heavier than the previous state record.
Possibly the most impressive catch was a black bullhead catfish that weighed six pounds, 11 1/2 ounces, more than double the size of the previous state record of three pounds, five ounces. The 22 1/2-inch fish was caught by Wayne Logan of Las Vegas in a farm pond near the town of Lida in Esmeralda County.
