Utah boy going to southern California mid October

Okay California board, I am heading down to the Long Beach area for a little vacation. I have never been fishing in the ocean and I really want to try it out. I will also be traveling with a couple kiddos so nothing to rough for the first time out. What charters/piers/beaches/whatever would be productive and a nice family outing and not overwhelmingly expensive? Anyone willing to help a fellow bfter out? Looking to be there mid to late October and a arrive early Saturday leave late Sunday type deal. Also any suggestions on beaches and hotels to stay in?
