FISHING: Excellent
Sep 24. Cool water temperatures and good stream flows have produced excellent fishing on the Wallowa River the past several weeks. This time of year water flows in the upper Wallowa Valley irrigation ditches/creeks are decreased, resulting in a migration of trout to the lower Wallowa River. Best public access on the Wallowa River is along Hwy 82 between Minam and the town of Wallowa (or float this section with one of our guides). Native trout and “residual” steelhead smolt between 10” and 18” are being caught in good numbers.
The October Caddis hatch is in full swing and the trout are going nuts. Think big fish and big flies. On the surface use: (size 8 – 12) orange and tan stimulators, muddler minnows, grasshoppers, madam x, and dark caddis patterns. Subsurface use: (size 8 – 14) copper johns, prince nymphs, hairs ears, and black flash-a-buggers. Surface action is best on cloudy days or once the shadows hit the water – but fishing can shut down with the cool evening temperatures.
