Anglers who were fishing at the White Pine County lake over the weekend told NDOW that the fishing was somewhat slow, but the fish that were taken were around 19 to 20 inches. Fish are being caught in deep water near the dam and in the channel between the upper and lower lakes. Sparkle PowerBait, worms and marshmallows are catching the fish while the favorite fly has been the flashback hare’s ear nymph.
Fishing continues to be rather slow for both brown and rainbow trout. The water is still murky but has begun to clear.
[#990033]ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Fishing pressure is still very low and no fish were creeled this past week.
Trout made their fall appearance at Lake Mead on Tuesday ( 11/23/04) when the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) began their seasonal stocking of the lake. Anglers who were on hand at the four stocking sites had fair luck for the planters along with some success for striped bass that were also pursuing the trout.
The hot spot for stripers following the plants was Pumphouse Cove where an angler reeled in a striper that weighed 16¼ pounds. Reports from the anglers who were on hand for the trout plant said stripers broke the surface soon after the stocking.
Most of the trout plants did not take place on the lake until late morning because of problems encountered at other stocking sites. One of the problems was that ice covered Cold Creek Pond in the Spring Mountain Range so workers had to break it before they could stock the fish.
Stripers continue to be caught by boaters who are fishing at the mouth of Las Vegas Wash. Most of the fish are healthy and there have been a fair number of fish caught recently that weigh from 4 to 5 pounds. Jigging, trolling, casting top water lures and drifting with anchovies are all catching the fish.
Very few anglers took to the water over the weekend in the Overton Arm because of difficult fishing and boating conditions caused by a rainstorm.
The next trout plants are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 3 at Hemenway, Horsepower, Pumphouse and North Saddle coves.
Anglers are beginning to return to the lake following the weekend storm that brought rain and windy weather to the lake. More moderate weather should bring a return of fair action for stripers that were being found above Cottonwood Cove prior to the storm.
The success for rainbow trout has fallen off in the past couple of weeks because of the low water level. It appears that the trout are heading to deep water after being stocked.
NDOW will be stocking trout at Cottonwood Cove, Placer Cove and Willow Beach on Friday, Dec. 3
[#990033]WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA[/#990033]
Daniel Maes, Assistant Area Manager said that cooler weather has entered the area but it has not had an adverse affect on fishing.
The majority of anglers were landing their limit of stocked rainbow trout, but several fish that ranged from 13 – 18 inches were also creeled.
Daytime temperatures averaged in the high 30s while the nighttime temperatures were in the low 20s. All reservoirs are still free of ice.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Rainbow trout were stocked Tuesday ( 11/23/04) at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. Cold Creek Pond in the Spring Mountains northwest of Las Vegas received 250 rainbows.
