Bear Lake Fishing Report and outlook for the Christmas Holidays

Bear Lake Fishing Report

The surface water temperature is approximately 38 F and the lake is mainly open water, although the north end of the lake is beginning to freeze along the shoreline areas. If the lake stays calm and the weather stays cold the lake can begin to form some significant ice sheets which can make boating riskly. Pay attention to ice formation and movement while on the lake at this time of year. The state park marina is open for launching boats. There is very little snow around the lake shore, but weather reports are predicting some accumulation by Christmas.

The Bonneville whitefish run is winding down and the fishing has slowed considerably from what it was a week ago. Fishermen are still catching a few fish along Cisco Beach and in the weedbeds south of Gus Rich Point in water 10-25 feet deep. Most anglers are jigging with small jigs (1/16-1/8 oz.) near the bottom. Small vertical jigging spoons, such as kastmasters and Swedish pimples can also be effective. A fair number of cutthroat trout and the occasional lake trout are also being taken while fishing for the whitefish.

Fishing for cutthroat and lake trout has picked up off the rockpile area. Most anglers are jigging in 30-60 feet of water. The lure of choice has been tube jigs tipped with cisco meat. Other anglers are reporting good success for cutthroat trout trolling off the Cisco Beach area using downriggers. These anglers have been using rapalas and spoons. Cutthroat trout will typically key-in on areas where cisco and other bait fish are found. Some good spots to try at this time of year besides the rockpile and Cisco Beach include the areas around 1st and 2nd Points and the pump house as well as the area off the Utah State Park marina.
[#ff8000]The concrete boat ramp at Cisco Beach was damaged by large waves from a severe wind storm on Sunday night (12/19) and is currently not useable.[/#ff8000] The State Park is working to try to get this ramp repaired. Anglers can launch their boats from shore from several areas around the lake, but should do so at their own risk due to rapidly changing weather conditions and rough bottoms.
