EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.
FRENCHMAN LAKE: There were reports of anglers ice fishing at the dam over the weekend. Call for updated information. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683.
LAKE DAVIS: Fishing pressure was very light last week with very few reports. Access to the lake continues to improve as the ice is melting. Approximately 50 percent of the lake is free of ice and fishable. Vehicle access is best to Coot Bay and Mallard Cove with 4-wheel drive recommended. Storms in the forecast can change things overnight, it’s best to call ahead for current conditions. California 2004 fishing licenses expire Dec. 31.
Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251. www.dollardsmarket.com. Email — dollards@psln.com. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing has remained red-hot for this time of year. Quality rainbows and browns are being caught all through the system. This has been one of the best fall/winter seasons in recent history. Blue wing olive nymphs in size 18 and 20 fished under an indicator in slower moving pools has been the best. For spinners, try black and yellow Panther Martins. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. The Gilly, 358-6113. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing continues to be very good. With storms on the way, this would be a great time to fish here. The fishing was very predictable over the weekend. When the wind was blowing, the fish were in and when it was calm, the fishing seemed to turn off. This is normal for this time of year. The best days are when the wind is blowing into the beach you are on. The fish seem to stack up right on the drop-off. Beaches with steeper drop-offs seem to hold more fish. The midnight cowboy and the northern lights beetle have been catching a lot of fish.
Shore anglers throwing rainbow and watermelon spoons. Boaters doing well trolling U-20 Flatfish in rainbow and brown. Also, Lyman frog pattern lures. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. The Gilly, 358-6113. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

TOPAZ LAKE: Opens Saturday. The opener is usually crowded, but last year 40-mph winds kept people away. A storm is forecast to hit Thursday and leave a foot of snow on the valley floor. Lake level is up and the lake was well stocked over the fall.
Fish one hour before sunrise to two hours after sunset. Limit is five trout. 10 mountain whitefish and 15 warm water game fish of which not more than five may be black bass.
Call for information, Topaz Marina, 266-3550. Topaz Lodge 266-3338.
SPARKS MARINA: Fishing should be decent here. Nightcrawlers probably the best bet at this time of year. Some bass and carp reported. Go down 20-30 feet with worms and spinners. The Gilly, 358-6113. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.
PACIFIC OCEAN: The dungeness crab and sand dab combination trips continue to yield excellent results. On the last trip out, last Wednesday, out of Emeryville, the New Seeker reported in with limits of dungeness crabs (six per person), also adding 1,377 sand dabs for the 24 anglers aboard fishing 15 to 20 miles out past the Golden Gate. These trips will continue out of Emeryville through Sunday. For information or reservations call (510) 654-6040.
SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 4,000 c.f.s. Anderson, Calif. The recent rain has blown out river, making it too muddy to fish. With the rain expected to last until at least Monday, the river will still need time to clear before any fishing can be done. Fishing for kings before rain was fair to good, fishing the Balls Ferry area. Catching chrome king salmon 15-25 pounds average. Using Flatfish T-50s and T-55s, are the ticket for big kings. King salmon season will remain open until Jan. 14.
Red Bluff to Redding, Rainbow trout. As weather allows, fly-fishing for rainbows producing some nice trout in the Redding to Anderson area. PTs and Micro May Fly nymphs working well. Practicing catch-and-release method.
Guide services and information: Hank Mautz Professional Guide Service, (800) 355-3113.
Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, (800) 670-4448 or (530) 221-6151.

WALKER LAKE: Fishing is as good. Boaters are reporting 20-30 fish per day. Trolling Tor-P-Dos, Flatfish and Apex in shallow water, 10-30-feet deep. Shore fishing is also good using Powerbait and casting Tor-P-Dos. Shore fishermen reporting 10-15 fish per day in the 2-4-pound range. Ed Jones, Bait and Tackle Shop, (w) 945-2525. (h) 945-2513.
WILDHORSE: Ice is 9-inches thick. Fishing is good for trout, average for perch. Cold Creek Road is open to the Bruneau River. Chukar hunting is good. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471
