Weber River this weekend
#1
Fished the Weber river this weekend for whitefish. Boy, that was fun. Thats the first time I'd ever fished with flies exclusively. It was a definite learning process but the fish were there and they were all pretty thick and long. I caught only four the first day but met up with Leaky and Sparky who helped me get on some fish the following day. The second day I caught nine and really started getting a feel for the bite. Man, its a soft bite when you get it to happen too. I only had two fish where I actually picked up the "thump" when they hit it. The rest, I just felt a drag, picked up line and the fish were there. I did see one guy catch about a twenty inch brown on a white tube jig, so that was cool. Folks if you are looking for some nice warm weather, brilliant sun, and beautiful scenery, its outside the valley. Get higher up and you forget all about the crud we live in down here. For all the fly fishermen/women, and those who would like to try flies, I caught all of my fish on gray scuds, and a flashback sow bug in a white color with a 3/0 split shot below my two dropper lines. I didn't catch any on pheasant tails or prince nymphs but some folks have told me that they work too. Anyway, its a good place to try anywhere you can get access and its kinda out in farmland so you don't have to worry about running into lots of people either.
