Let me weigh in with my half of "scent". I have used just about every kind of bait and artificial imaginable for fresh water. As has been mentioned, the cheap stuff produces just about as well as the expensive - I don't think the fish look at price tags. That said, I have had very good luck with the Power Grubs and Maggots while fishing in streams. The tubes have produced bass for me in still waters, but I am not sure that a cheap one would not have done just as well. I have some of the paddle tails and crawdads as well - those I can't vouch for either as far as their "better" performance goes.
As you have read so far in this thread, there are many opinions about it. I would suggest just pick up some of your favorite cheapos and some of the expensive ones(try to get the same kind of each) - get the kind you use alot and compare them side by side on the same day and in the same place. You might find out like I did - it matters more what you do with the bait than the brand name of it.
Another option is to get the prepackaged liquid scents and apply them to whatever offering you present - the scents are very versatile and you can use them on your lures, flies and cut or live-type baits - you can even use it on insects and worms(yes, they have worm enhancers and scents) as a matter of fact, they even make salmon egg cologne. So if you wanted, you could make your frog lures or leaches smell like roe.
Bottom line ? It may or may not make you a more successful fisherman - but, can you really have too much of something that might catch a fish ?
