I have done that and yes it works. The problem is the worms do not last real long but if you need some for a last minute trip they are ok.
The screwdrivers have to be pretty long also. The worm shocker I got from my grandpa was made from a paint roller with the part that holds the sleeve straightened out. If you stand too close to the rods when they are pluged in you can feel the current in the ground. The idea is that you shock long enough for the worms to surface then you kill the power and retrieve your worms.
