Night Fishing the Berry

Submersible lights are legal to use on Utah waters. Unless you are going to anchor in extremely shallow water, I doubt that you will catch many chubs and shiners at strawberry using a suspended minnow trap and a submersible light. I have used an inexpensive white submersible light at Strawberry off of my boat and also while ice fishing at night. It seemed to help attract fish. The lighted Thill lights are available at most of the tackle shops in the area. They come in at least two styles, I like the style that the line goes through the center of the float, rather than along the side of it. I don't know if they come in multiple colors, but I use the red ones. It depends on how deep of water I am fishing on how deep I set the stop. Typically I fish about 30 to 40 feet deep water, and I will let the stop go down anywhere from 15 to 25 feet. I like to use two or three hooks (JP Rig style for three hooks) in my minnows. I find that if I use only one hook I have to let the fish take the bait longer in order to hook them, and in the process more fish get deep hooked. With two or three hooks (with the points prominently sticking outside of the minnow) I can set the hook more quickly and rarely have a problem with them swallowing it. I also want to try to use circle hooks more and see how they work. I find they work great for cats, but I haven't tried them much for trout.
