Ogden Parkway Revelation
#1
Went to the Ogden Parkway on Saturday. Started of at 10:30, windy and cold. Within a few casts, had my first 14" brown. Yes, good day. Caught it on a size 18 PT. Spend the next hour fruitlessly pounding the water and feeding the trees flies. About 11:30 a BWO hatch started. Fish were rising and I found a pod of willing browns. Pulled out 4. The next cast a "log" moved over and struck my fly. Holly cow, it was the largest brown I have ever seen down there. It took me for a ride, stared me in the eye and broke the line. It swam away with my fly. It scattered the pod of fish and I moved up. The next hole produced a few then the next I had a revelation. I use the pinch on strike indicators. My was well used from the day and had slid down to about 2 inches from my fly. I didn't know this. On my next cast, I had a violent strike and netted a beautiful 15" brown. I didn't know the strike indicator was the reason and moved it back into position. Three casts later another violent stike but I missed. This time the indicator was on top of the fly. So I replaced the indicator moving it just two inches above the fly (size 18 BHPT) and casted again. I could not keep the fish off. So now I am off to the vice to try to tie a "drymerger" fly that will not twist my line when I cast. I tied some parasol flies, but they twist my leader really bad. Any suggestions would be great. The strike indicator method worked this time, but many times the fish shy when the see the indicator, so I would like to avoid using it.
