Oh and heres another unbeliveable but true story from my past.
Same boat, trolling off San Diego I had a friend from work along. He had a new Penn International SW50 reel on a Ugly stick pole. The rig cost him $835 and he was very proud of the outfit. I had my line on a down rigger and we were trolling in 300 feet of water about five miles of the coast. I had a Rapala mackrel down at the 75 foot level and my friend had his jig on the surface about 100 feet behing the boat. My friend had put his pole in the rod storage holder on the back of my boat. You know, those cheap plastic rod holders ? They are NOT for trolling.... You getting the picture?
Yep, WHAMMO! His pole gets hit hard. The Penn and Ugly stick dissappear over the transome so-o-o-o fast it was hard to even see.
I hear this loud scream.........*&^^$%^^&&
I look back and see the plastic rod holder broken and mostly gone.
He is really upset, I felt sick that he just lost $835 on my boat.
I continued straight ahead for about one eight of a mile and then out of respect I did a 180 and headed back to where the disaster happened. It was very quiet onboard. He and I just looked at each other and knew what each were feeling. I hit the down rigger switch to bring up my jig and figured we would have a beer , head home and cry.
As my jig ascended to the surface I could see a flash, flash of yellow down at about 30 feet. I figured I had a Yellow Tail ...
Whoopie, a Yellow tail that we didnt care about now.
As the jig came up I thought " thats sure an odd fighting fish".
You guessed it. I had hooked my BEST friends Penn International SW50.......
I hooked it right smack in the reel itself.
I grabbed the rod and reel, handed it to him....
We didnt kiss or anything like that but I could see the look in his eyes........
Man o man was he greatfull. So was I.. What a relief.
Freaky huh?
Its all true and I guess that beats my giant lobster story....
