It is really difficult to keep the extremities warm when immobile. In cold conditions, the body shunts blood away from the fingers, toes, hands, feet, etc., to keep the core of the body warm (our bodies know we can live without hands or feet, but not without any vital organs). So unless there is movement to force the blood to circulate, it becomes quite difficult to stay warm. Therefore, if you find a combo of clothing that does the job, well done!
Personally, I am a huge fan of multi-layered synthetics, but silk is pretty good as the first layer. Wool, though out of fashion, isn't a bad top layer, either. Not as good as some of the windblock fleece, but I like the rustic nature of it. And being from Idaho, and adjacent to Wyoming, it is my patriotic duty to support the sheep industry []
