Spring Bass and Pike
#21
Bowfin can be caught all along the east and south. They are commonly caught while bass fishing, as they usually dig the same territory that bass do. They don't like very strong current, but like a moderate current and still water just off the main current of a river; and of course are found in lakes too. The darker the water, the better they seem to like it.

Bowfin prefer fresh cut bait and live bait. THey are commonly caught while catfishing as well.

Some say they are good to eat, some say they aren't. Personally, I wouldn't try it. There are too many good eating fish to even worry with it.

They have an excellent gaming quality, and like mattscru was saying, I also target them when it seems that nothing else is happening. They have blistering fast runs, jump from the water, and reach to over 20 pounds.

My favorite place to find muds is along shallow banks above deep holes or along the mouth of a small creek or lake running into the main river or body of water. Any still water off a moving current is also very effective location.
