I agree with Stripercraze on this one. I personally find that striper fishing is best right after sunset and all through the night (up till 2-4 a.m.) I'm curious to hear that they were nibbling on the chovies but they weren't taking them. I think you're right. The pieces were too big for them, which means there was a school of small stripers. I'm talking ones the size of your hand. It gets really frustrating when I encounter schools of these small stripers. I find that casting about 10-20 yards beyond them may bring larger stripers. But that's not always the case.
