Some Help, Please.
#28
[black]Well with that info, this is what I would recommend.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]1. Worms will get you some smaller catfish and a bullhead or two. Cut bait(shad, chubs, carp etc.) will get you larger fish and probably more of them. Stink bait and dough baits might work but don't count on them in that environment for much of anything - they work much better elsewhere.[/black]
[black]2. Your line will be twisted and probably kink and have more breakage than you will want - due to the fact that you unspooled it and respooled it again. It will work for a while, so don't just trash it right away unless you have a few bucks for new line(if you do, I would have a tackle shop respool your reel for you - it only cost a couple of dollars to have them do it).[/black]
[black]3. Use at least 1.5 oz of weight maybe more depending on the river's current flow - preferably an in-line no roll sinker, but a pyramid or a bank sinker will also work.[/black]
[black]4. A size 1/0 to 3/0 hook for cut bait or a size 1-2/0 baitholder for worms.[/black]
[black]5. If you have a swivel, use a larger one - NO snap swivels ![/black]
[black]6. If you are going to use a leader, use the 12 pound line you have already. Cut off about any where from 18 to 24 inches of your main line for the leader. Tie the hook and swivel on the leader(it will leave you a total leader length of about 12-16 inches) then tie the other end of the swivel to the main line. In a river situation, the shorter the leader - the better. Don't worry, catfish are not line, leader or hook shy. And a short leader gets snagged much less than a long one. [/black]
[black]7. Start out fishing right under the pier, then work your way out farther. That way, you will not spook the close in fish by pulling in a fish that is further out. Also, piers are structure - and that is where fish like to hang out - especially catfish ! [/black]
[black]8. Only leave your bait in one place for a maximum of 10 minutes. The active biting fish will take your bait quickly. Rebait OFTEN if using cut bait - at least every 10 minutes. The attractive quality of worms will usually last a little longer - still no more than 20 minutes per worm. [/black]
