Okay, I have got to say this thread went out to right field.

Okay then, I use more expensive reels (basically cause I didn't pay full price and because I CAN[laugh])
Fresh water will not hurt a fly reel at all. The line is way different from regular fishing line so you are bringing in a lot of water everytime you reel.
It does make sense to break a muti rod at least into two pieces to restring, but I have seen people accidentally drop one of the pieces.
I do carry a few rods with different line when I go out so I don't have to change line, but there are occassions, when I need a line that I didn't anticipate (like a floating line with a 20' leader for deep nymphing and a floating line with 9 or 71/2 foot leader for dies, I know your thinking it would be easier to just change leaders, but at times I can actually use both)
Anyway, making sure the drag is a little tight (incase the rod does come appart, or the reel falls of) I lower the whole 8' to 10' rod reel first down into the water and restring. Never need to go past the half way mark...long arms, LOL
