weight forward?
#24
[black]Lordoftheflies, yes you can use either. It will be a preference. As I stated I prefer WF. I feel I have to muscle DT to get over 60'. I feel the thicker middle does have more resistance going through the guides. This article and my Hubby will disagree with me, so it is personal preference[/black]

[black]double taper fly line is 90 feet long. In the first 15 feet of the fly line (the end closest to the fly), the fly line increases both in width and weight the closer you get towards the middle of the line. At 15', the fly line is at the middle section of the fly line - which is the maximum width and weight of the fly line. This middle section of the fly line continues for 60 feet, with the same weight and width. Then, in the final 15 feet of fly line (the end closest to the reel), the fly line begins to lose both width and weight just like the front of the line.[/black]
[black] The light taper on the front of the fly line allows for the fly line to land on the water without creating a disturbance, and the weighted middle of the fly line allows for good general fly casting. The double taper line is also excellent for casting using either S casts or the roll cast, as the weight in the middle of the fly line makes this easier. [/black]

[black]The weight forward taper fly line (also 90' with some specialty lines being longer) is the most popular fly line on the market today - as well as being the most expensive. [/black]
[black]A fly line that has a weight forward taper has extra weight and width built into the first 30 feet of the fly line, although some specialized lines extend or shorten this taper. The rest of the fly line will then be level, of equal weight and width for the remainder of the fly lines length. The advantages of a weight forward fly line include longer casts, the casting of larger flies and more effective casts in windy conditions. [/black]

[black]For beginner anglers, weight forward fly lines are the recommended fly line to get. They are easier to cast than other fly lines, allowing for better control and longer casts. Additionally, weight forward fly lines are always used when casting things like bass bugs and streamers - in short, heavy things. [/black] [black]I am no expert on fly line, I just know what I like. There are so many variations out there it is tuff. You also Have your LEVEL lines and another popular line is the Triangle taper.
[black]There is also the rocket tapers.[/black]I am just trying to keep it simple for you as a beginner.[/black]
[black]All I can do is tell you the lines I prefer and I have done some experimenting with also as ScottyP said the action of the rod. I like the Rio Trout Select because I fish a stiff BIIx and turn around and fish Bamboo. I still feel that a GOOD dry line can make a BIG difference.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]What makes Dry line float? Air pockets or even a hollow core.[/black]
[black]Sinking line will have lead or something similer for the core[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]One other thing, sinking line will be WF, but you will have to decide if you want WET CELL which will for a belly in the line. Great for fishing weedy places because it will put the fly above the weeds.[/black]
[black]Or, Density Compensated...an even sink with no belly, great for rivers as well as bigger lakes.[/black]
[black]All companies make sinking lines and they will all sink at their rate, but it will sink faster the higher the number.[/black]
[black]Intermediate or a TYPE I will sink very slowly, great for fishing the shore lines in Spring and Fall when the fish move in, or Shallow lakes. The monsters I have caught at Henry's were on an Intermediate, but it was fall and the lake is very shallow.[/black]
[black]Heat of summer you want to get down fast, a TYPE IV to a TYPE VII. All sinking lines will hit the bottom, it just depends on how long you want to wait, plus at times the bottom is where the big guys are and if you go to slow, the little guys will get it before it gets to the big guys.[/black]
