Coit Electric Reel

Gents, I have information about Coit fishing tackle. Mr.Coit was a citrus grower south of San Jose and every year he would have to round up a new crew to care for the trees and harvest the fruit. He cam upon a business idea that he would offer his buyers a fishing reel, rod or combo. Not satisfied with commercially produced equipment he trained his agricultural crew to make this equipment. The "Electric" part of the Coit reel is that barrel affair on tne front of the reel. This when switched on activated a magnetic anti reverse in the reel. The problem with the reel was when the users got back from a fishing trip they simply put the outfit up till they went fishing again. As we know the batterys of that eara were leak prone to say the lease. Many of the used Coit Electrics have severe corrsion in that barell. Later in his production he kept the "Electric" reel name but he put a rubber shim in the barell so a battery would not make contact. This is most likely that there are no patents on the reel. He also made rods, Coit Fishing Pole Club pins and sponsored a book about fishing basics for kids. He allwoed the public to fish on ponds on his property. These items were made in the late 50s and early 60s. I have a complete collection of the later model reels and one of the earlier ones (used) it has the typical corrosion.
