Flaming Gorge Catch Report- 1/12/08
#1
Fished on Saturday morn, just downstream from Currant Creek. I set-up shop around 9:00am in 57ft of water and saw fish on the first drop. I caught 2 lakers (about 22 inches) and lost another 3 at the hole, before leaving around noon. The few parties around me were doing pretty well and I saw several lakers hitting the ice. I had strikes or fish on with tube jigs, but both of my fish came on the ice using Jigging Shad Raps in shad color, tipped with sucker.

As I headed south, I checked the ice down the reservoir. The lake is capped all the way to Pipeline, but open water pockets occur below the Brinegar Ranch. Safe ice drops down to about Upper Marsh Creek, but it's pretty variable in the area, anywhere from 3-8 inches depending on where you drill.

After picking up some lunch I went back to Marsh Creek for the evening, drilling holes and trying several different spots. Just before dark I moved back near shore, and set-up for the night. I jigged two rods in 20-22 ft of water and set-up a tip-up in 10-15 ft of water. The action was hot between 6:00-8:00pm and I iced 6 lakers (14-24in) and 6 burbot (16-22in), losing several more. It was actually a chore chasing down rods and tip-ups, and I either missed or broke off fish because they were running on me. The chaos kept me warm though! The fish were extremely active, coming in suspended and even dropping down to hit my bait. I caught lakers and burbot on luminescent tube jigs and curly tailed grubs, tipped with sucker meat, and dipped in Smelly Jelly (anchovy and shrimp). I caught burbot on the tip-up in 10ft and 15ft of water, rigged with a luminescent Swim Shad tipped with sucker meat.

All lakers were eating plankton, burbot continue to munch on crayfish and smallies. One 22-inch burbot had 26 crayfish in it! I also caught a female with exploding ovaries in 10-15ft of water. Hope it helps!
