I believe you just might be correct, smallmout89. Even when fish are gorging, they can be thrown off by the wrong color or the wrong size. I'll take more feeding fish on a 3" grub than any other size. I've caught my fair share with a 4" grub and even a 2" but the 3 seems to work the best where I fish. Sometimes I have to nip off tails or slice open a lure to alter its appearance a tad bit in the summer when fish are selective. Since you are a fly fisherman, you are well schooled in the art of presentation and the big difference subtle variations can make. You could teach me a few things about that. I'm more of an engineer than scientist when it comes to fishing. I go with whatever works.
And, yeah, trebles to me are a scourge. I do a lot of catch and release and I'd rather not tear a fish's mouth apart and then set it free.
