Leaky: I can’t believe you wrote Nankoweep; that’s where I perfected Mouse Patrol. When I did that route, I got caught down there in a NON-STOP 4 day rainstorm. I had the rare privilege of seeing so much water in Nankoweep Creek that it actually changed course. It was just amazing. I can still hear the sounds of beachball-sized boulders clanging and banging off of each other (for days), as they rolled down the new creekbed.

When I came out, I stayed the nite below Marion Point, below the dead tree you had to climb down to stay on trail. The mice were so bad (and so fun), that I actually strung up my pack. The first attempt was between 2 rock croppings , 15’ apart. Then, I sat back, only to watch them walk the rope to get to the pack. It became known as “Dead Mouse Walking”, if you catch my drift.[
] After ‘bout an hour of this splendid entertainment, which was keeping me warm on a cold October nite, I finally had enuff and hung my pack straight down from a cropping. Had to rig up a plate of some sort halfway up the rope cuz they kept trying to come down the rope. The bastids were insatiable!

LH2: This just makes so much sense, doesn’t it? This is a must-try experiment! As they say in Alaska, I foresee “product” at the end of my fishing line. The fact that I’m gonna be entertained in the process is just a total bonus. Fun times ahead...
