Jeff hooked our English Setter in the . He took a #16 Copper John. Mr. Hockey was admiring his back cast when Hunter (who is always hunting) noticed a green bug flying back & forth over his head. Well he jumped 6’ straight up & got the surprise of his life! I hear “Vince, I hooked your dog”. I look over & Hunter looks like he is trying to get peanut butter out from under his . The wife starts crying immediately & I have a sick feeling in my stomach. I ran over there & try to hold his mouth open. He promptly bites me & I start bleeding like a stuck pig (the blood looks cool on my waders; I might not wash it off.) Jack soaks his boots crossing the stream to help. Jeff suggests the stick in the jaw trick to hold his mouth open (that’s why we call him Jiffy Jeff) & keep Hunter from chewing off our hands. At this point I am envisioning a fast trip down the mountain to find a vet & other worse scenarios. We get his mouth open & there is the fly stuck in the top of his about an inch back from the end. Out comes the Dr.Slicks. I clamped on & gave a great tug! The thought ran through my head that this could have a bad ending. Having learned from experience that tender tugging when hooks & lips or cheeks are involved – just does not work. Out pops the fly. That dog never made a peep. I am going to miss that hound.
