Here are three good ones for you. The first really wierd catch I ever witnessed was when watching a man casting a whole shad rig off the back of his boat in an Oklahoma river for catfish. A blue heron watched it from the moment he cast to the time it hit the water and then dove in after it. When he emerged he already had the hook down and he climbed to about 40 ft. When he reached the end of the line he went down like a Japanese Zero. The guy got him to the boat and then took a quick glance at all the spectators before grabbing the bird and beheading him with a knife. Bad day to be a heron.
Then there was a time I was fishing the Caney river in Oklahoma with a Sassy Shad. The water was so muddy most of the year that it perplexed me how fish could see to eat in that crap. I was reeling the jig through the water next to the shoreline and, just as I pulled the jig up, a water moccassin darted out of the water and grabbed it. He was instantly hooked and flailed all over the bank. I was dancing like a southern pentacostal trying to avoid getting too close to his mouth. It was like the You Got Served dance movie for rednecks.[sly] I pinned him with one foot and crushed him with the other before I cut my line and kicked him back in the water. I spent the rest of the day cautiously looking everywhere I stepped.
The most wierd catch I ever made was fly fishing streamers after dark. I was at the the end of my back cast and when I went to swing forward my line just fell out of the air. I followed the line back with my light and when I got to the end I found a bat. he was just laying there screeching. The crazy thing is that he had intercepted my wooly bugger and was actually hooked in the mouth.[shocked] Even though this was a testament to the amazing sonar capability of the bat, i'm sure that it would have been much more useful for him to have really good eyesight.[crazy]
