Doug Hannon (designer of the reel) is no slouch, known as "The Bass Professor" I'm sure he put as much into the drag as he did the spool. Doug is not a new commer also, he was one of the first serious Bass fishers to prefer the spinning reel to a casting. It makes sense that he would develop something like this.

As far as quality reels go, $100 is not alot of cash. Look at the price of a Shimano "Stella" or "Sustain". Stella's are like $500.
