My neighbor is very active in metal detecting, and he has done quite well for himself. He found one little metal trinket a couple of months ago that sold for $1500 on eBay. At near the same time he also ran across a glass bottle (completely different location, though) that brought in several hundred dollars on eBay.
I think the biggest thing is getting a decent detector and learning how to use it, to decipher the beeps. Don't go buy the $30 Harbor Freight special. He told me to buy a Whites. I got it last year at the Sportsman's show (coming up very soon!). He, and the guys at that booth, said it was a great starter unit. If you get actively into it he said you could quickly get good enough to find enough to pay for an upgraded detector.
Now I just need to find time to get out and use it, and convince him to take me out and show me how.
