Flaming Gorge Weekend Report- 3/9/08
#1
Well, the weather was actually pretty nice for this weekends burbot fishing and the ice conditions were good.

Friday night- Burbot fishing was good. We fished in Upper Marsh Creek, spreading out in 15-52 ft of water. Fishing seemed best in deeper water (>40ft) from 7-8:30pm. Typical lures and techniques were working. I fished best with a Jigging Shad Rap in glow firetiger, but tubes, grubs, and spoons also worked (see pic). Five anglers caught around 50 fish, with some 25-28 inchers (see pic) hitting the ice. On a mood point, a few of the larger fish had 8-9 inch kokanee in their stomachs (see pic). Ice was about 18 inches with solid edges.

Saturday night- Burbot fishing was still good (at least for some). Five of us fished the same area mentioned above and caught around 40 burbot. For the fourth trip in a row, it appears the guy furthest from the main channel catches the fewest fish. Unfortunately on this night it was me! We caught some bigger fish, one of which had a 8-inch kokanee hanging out of its mouth. The bite was much lighter, tip-ups weren't as effective, and shallower holes from 20-30 ft were the more productive. Ice was snow covered again and much easier to walk on.

Overall- Rainbow fishing is really good right now too. Over the weekend we caught some really nice rainbows (up to 20 inches) fishing in 15-20ft of water, using Foxee jigs, paddle bugs, etc. in chartreuse, glow, and firetiger colors and tipped with meal worm.

Hope it helps! Ryno
