Okay, sometimes with the wind problems, even a 5 oz does not do it. The most I have put on is an 8 oz. But, you really have to choose your lures with that size. It impedes the action on most of them. This is a popular technique. I was first really seriously exposed to it in Minnesota. The area around Duluth and Lake Superior Bay there. Some people don't have money to spend on a fast large boat plus the hundreds of dollars for a good quality downrigger. After ice out, and until the beginning of summer, they fish for lake trout in about 30-40 feet. Then, they will go about 60-70 feet. They don't catch huge ones, the max catch nowdays is around 20-25 pounds. The biggest I have caught at Flaming Gorge was 22 pounds. It was in about 45-50 feet, off Mustange Ridge, in spring (middle of April). The most important thing is not boat size and downriggers. Spend your money on a really good fishfinder unit. The Lowrance Model 525c DF is good, but I will save up money and get the 8000 watt output model they have, with the larger pixel and screen size. That will make things much easir. This is not going to be for a long while though, a long while.
