Fish Finder help

I decided since i have a fishfinder in the boat i mines well use it for what it is designed to do since all i use it for now is to see how deep i am but i dont know what to set it at or how to adjust it it is a lowrance x-85 i think if i set the fish alarm on it is always showing fish and i know there is not that many fish every where i go and when i turn it off like i have read before it never shows fish and i know theres fish because i could see them off the side of the boat at the dock i have never had a problem catching fish but now i want to get into wipers and kokes and i need a finder
