I only fish the calm mornings and evenings on the big river, and only dry flies. Since the fish don't see many flies, I can usually just get by with basic stuff like parachute adams, elk caddis, and sometimes a trico spinner. I never use anything smaller than a 16 there, and usually a 14. Sometimes, a hopper or big beetle works too. I'm just not a streamer or nymph guy. Been there, done that. I've found that the fish just don't rise there when there's any wind, hatch or no hatch.
When its windy in the morning, I just take the short 45-minute drive over to the smaller river between the dams, if you know what I mean.[] It fishes well any time with dries.
