Well, lil' bro, I use about a 4" QUICK LINK, then attach links of 2" x 1" maybe 5/16th chain. Or I should say strands of chain. Maybe 4 or 5 strands consisting of 3 to 6 links.
Holds great, even on moving water (but it will tear up the river bed), and never gets stuck.
My rope is clothes line rope, 50', marked at every 10' .
I have one pully mounted under my seat, the other at the oar riser. I then mounted a rope stopper on the frame of my boat to hold the rope.
