A whipping motion? I agree there is no loop, and I have done as described ON stillwater shore lines.
The fact you are lifting pulling fly to surface or dry off the water by means of lifting rod tip up, then redirecting it, to me is just a short roll cast, longer - sure lift rod behind and form the "D", then shoot.
