The difference between turning yourself in or turning away and leaving it to rot it just this simple. Turning yourself in is usually a misdemeanor with a fine, turning away and leaving the animal is Wanton destruction and a felony which if convicted could revoke your hunting priveleges and maybe not allow you to carry a firearm again. Officers are usually very good if you are honest and up front. Just my $0.02
