Very fine steel wool can be used with flint and steel or other fire starters to ignite a fire. You can even ignite it using a 9-volt battery. It burns hot and can server as tinder if you can't find anything else.
I always take a small ziploc full of dryer lint with me when camping/hiking. Even a small spark ignites it, and it's also great for emergencies.
Bottom line, you should carry with you at least 2 methods of starting a fire anytime you're out in the great outdoors.
The only other useful thing I know of that steel wool is used for is as a scrubber to clean your pots.
