It sounds like a FURLED leader. They come in all sizes. 5' long to 7' long.
You attach it to your fly line and on the other end of the Furled leader you attach tippet. 1' to 5' of tippet.
Furled leaders are tapered just like a regular leader, but they are much softer and turn over better. When pulling the line in they sort of spiral so they don't disrupt the water. You can cast one by hand, they are that nice.
