Whenever you can get away with a straight shank hook it's always better but with swimbaits or jerkbaits an ewg (extra wide gap) hook is almost a necessity. A 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook is a pretty good size for most jerkbaits. The wide gap allows the bait to be pushed down into the belly of the hook exposing more hook to dig in the fishes mouth.
Some jerkbaits have a slot in the middle of the bait that minimizes the amount of plastic that has to be pushed down when setting the hook. If yours do not have that slit get rid of them and go get some that do.
