Pelican Report (06/20/09) and Questions
#2
Here's one way I catch big bass at Pelican in mid summer. I like to use a 5 inch Kalin's grub in a brown or blue pearl color. I nose hook the grub (not weedless at all) on a split shot rig. You can also use a VERY small standard jig head with the same grubs. During grey light in the AM or PM (I prefer AM) larger bass will move to the outer edge of the reed beds to feed. Your presentation does not have to be weedless to fish the edge. Of course, there are a million other techniques that will get them, but this has worked consistently for big bass for me. Topwater lures will also raise fish at the edge in the grey. I have found weedless frogs to be good for working right inside the thick reeds.
