I am assuming you are talking about the seat back collapsing and not the seat bottom.
I actually did the same thing. I cut a piece of plexi-glass to shape and slid it behind the foam on the seat back. Without the glass, the straps on the seat would start to compress into the foam and the foam would also start to bend around my back. The result was that I was constantly tightening the seat back straps throughout the day. I added the plex-glass 3 years ago and it has been comfortable since.
I was originally referring to the seat bottom. Again, it's three years old and, while I don't get out as much as you or TubeDude, it has seen many, many trips and never caused me problems.
It's obvious though that what floats my boat (or rear end) doesn't necessarily float everyone else's.
