light line vs. heavy line
#28
Nearly all my fishing is stream fishing for trout -- most of it with ultralight spinning (6 or 7 foot ultralight rod, depending on size of stream and amount of brush, either my Pflueger UL Supreme or Alcedo Micron and 2 lb. line). I do lose a few, but have landed quite a few up to 18 inches and 2+ lbs. with that gear. I do, however, carry a spare spool with 4 lb line in the event I start to lose a lot of fish. When I expect the fish to average in the 16 to 18 inch class, I go with 4 lb. line. I still use the 7 foot ultralight rod, but switch to a Shimano Stratic 1000. When the fish are really big -- 18 inches and up and going to 5 lbs. and up, in a big, fast canyon river with boulders in the stream and on the bank (can't run with the fish) I switch to a seven foot light action rod, a 4000 Shimano Stratic, and 8 lb, fluorocarbon line.

I guess I'd be in the light line group.

There is the problem with overstressing trout using light line. This is bad when the flow is low and water temperatures too high. I normally switch to bicycling during those times and let the trout rest.
