5 is a fine rod. I admit I use 6 weight mostly on stillwater, because I can cast BIG flies.
My hubby uses 5 weight.
I have found some sinking lines just don't want to load up for some reason.
You know what I mean. You are false casting trying to feed line on the forward and normally you can feel it slide through your fingers. Or Double hauling, you feel that tug. But I have some sinking line, I swear I have to muscle and I just don't feel the load.
Maybe try it on a 4 weight or buy heavier line like a 6 weight.
I think it is my Rio sinking line. My Orvis sinking line casts great!
