Around here, a 4, 5 or 6 weight. You mention the Uinta's...that would be a 4 wt, but stillwaters like strawberry a 5 or 6 weight.
I am still going to say an all around rod IS a 5 weight, because you can cast bigger flies, but not over powering for the 6"
8'6" to 9' is a great length.
I agree that the line thing is like blah, blah blah, unless you can see it. Lines are the most confusing specially these days. They keep adding more and more specialty lines.
It really will get easier, but you do have to experience it to know this.
Just take it slow and ask allot of questions.
