I have over 20 Loomis rods rigged that way and have never had one break. My Loomis Salmon and Steelie rods all have the longer butts. I also found the 12' ugly sticks to cast further with the spinning style rod vs. the casting rod using casting reels. I did cut the butt on the Ugly Stik down and gimble the end for a fighting belt. It makes it much more user friendly to cast big weight and fight large fish from the bank.
