I've not fished Strike this early in years past but Friday we trolled for trout w/o any strikes; not a single trout. Rapalas, flies, etc. None on the finder like is usual in late spring through fall. First time I've been skunked on C.J. trout; ever. Then we tried crappie at and around the hump. Caught several but they were quite smallish. We did see several floaters.
Regarding limits, I don't see a problem other than how it affects the size of the fish. How do you get bigger crappie w/o wiping them out. IMO, I think it would be pretty hard to wipe them out in Strike? I see massive concentrations of them in almost every part of the reservoir and have for years.
I know where there are less fish of a particular species they usually run larger...
Why are the crappie larger in Brownlee? Depth? Food? Reservoir size or water quality? Fishing pressure? Structure?
Since both are in the Snake River drainage why the difference?
I have no idea how you balance limits to insure better size on the average but it would sure be nice if there were truly some big crappie in Strike...
And for that matter, it would be nice if it had some record smallies like Dworshak...
I think Strike has the potential for both. I'd rather catch one 15" crappie than fifty 8"ers...
Maybe managing limits is one key to insuring better size...
