Hey Weekend Warrior,
This is off subject but how do you like that Shimano Curado reel? Have you had it long or used it much? As someone that uses a flyrod 95% percent of the time I agree Utah has too many fly rod snobs. Come on it's all just fishing and don't kid yourself getting the basics down in fly fishing to catch fish can be mastered by most 5 y.o. Besides while a fly rod is great for many situations there many where it's not nearly as effective. Anyway I'm currently considering getting a baitcasting rod and reel. Only have spinning outfits besides the fly stuff now. Was thinking about a Curado Fish Eagle II combo already. Just saw today Cabelas Club has it for $200.
I love my Curado!!! It has a high gear ratio for quick line pickup and its tough as nails yet light as a feather. I have had if for 2 years and its been great. I own the 200 D. The newest version I believe is the E. Its green, mine is silver.
I dont know anything about the fish eagle rods but my suggestion would be to get as long as you are comfortable with and a lighter action than you think you need. Too often people get baitcaster and think they need a 6 foot broom stick rod. Baitcaster reels are awesome but if you cant load up the rod on a cast, you will either get backlash or not cast very far. I like the 7 foot rods in a medium action. Sounds like a great deal at cabelas. I would jump on it.
For steelhead you want a rod thats more like 8'6" or longer. Seven foot is a little short in my opinion. I personally like 9'6" for drifting and 10'6" for float fishing.
