How do you avoid snags?

I've always been told to never let the prospect of a snag interfere with casting for the best spot. I've caught a few nice cats in one spot, but I've lost about 10 hooks there, too. I'm not talking about simple knots being undone. I'm talking about line-snapping. Any rigs that are good at avoiding thus?
