I've heard of people using a plank to get on the ice like this very early in the morning when it is still fairly cold. Then you have an usually warm day and by the time you are done fishing and come back for your plank the ice has receded and melted so much that your plank isn't long enough and has floated off or is stuck on shore, etc. Then you have to get wet. Getting all of your gear to shore if you packed a bunch of it out on a sled can be a pain.
If this does indeed happen and then winds pick up very strong the whole sheet of ice can be torn up from the opening between the shore and the ice....
I'm not saying this happens very often or anything but it wasn't a horrible decision by this person to play it safe. It is always better safe than sorry. Cut the guy some slack[
