I know what your saying about the deckhands and even capt fishing when it's slow. But on a couple of my overnighters on Blackjack and Shogun years ago when the Barricuda and bass went nutz we had no on helping landing fish.
Lots of in-experienced anglers on board made for a very dangerous time. Several anglers would reel the fish to the water then lift it out of the water with like 3 1/2 feet between the fish and the end of the pole.
Then of course the fish comes off and now there is 3' of line swinging around with a jig on it! [shocked]
Word to the wise. Reel in as close to the end of your pole then lift the fish, if it comes off there is not 3' of line swinging around.
I was really surprised no one got hurt, other than a drunk falling down the stairs [pirate]
