Western Outdoor News Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Set to Begin
#1
CABO SAN LUCAS (Los Cabos) - The 12th Annual Western Outdoor News/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament is set to begin later today.

Many of the expected 120 teams have already arrived to celebrate the 12th year of this two-day tournament, billed as the richest tuna event in the world. Off to a great beginning, the teams have been greeted by ideal weather, as well as catch reports of some huge tuna weighing 351.5 pounds, 313 pounds, and six cow-sized yellowfin tuna weighing over 200 pounds; all were caught in the waters off of San Jose del Cabo during the past few weeks.

That same area produced a new tournament record last year, the 383-pound yellowfin, taken by the local Fisher Man team, earning them the significant sum of $169,480 in prize money.

Although most of the attention will be on the tuna coming to the scales in Cabo this week for WON's tournament, there will also be dorado and wahoo jackpots, which according to local Eric Brictson, "Conditions are ideal for wahoo since the clean blue water has moved within a few miles from shore and the water temperatures are ideal, averaging 76 to 80 degrees...plus there are ample amounts of local baitfish." Brictson continued, "Tuna and dorado also seem to prefer similar water conditions. I expect many boats will concentrate on the Gordo Banks during the event."

As the clock ticks down to Wednesday's 2:00 p.m. registration, the staff and sponsors are putting the finishing touches on an event that appears to have plenty going for it. Good weather, clean, warm water, bait, big fish and most importantly a good time. The new teams, as well as the veteran teams, will find that living up to the WON/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament's motto,"Fish Hard and Party Harder" will not be difficult.
