White bass at Deer Creek
#33
Some trout grow well when they have forage species to eat. Others don't. Even some of the ones that eat other fish have better overall populations (lots of good sized fish instead of a few very big fish) and better fishing without competition from chubs etc. Henry's Lake in Idaho is a great example. Big fish. No forage species.

Yep. It's cold in the Dakotas. They do NOT have as long of an ice fishing season as we do. And they do NOT have as long of a cold water season as we do. We get snow at Strawberry in July or August quite often. I frequent an ice fishing website all the time, and we get some of the earliest, and some of the latest ice fishing in the country. Why? Because of elevation. The highest point in North Dakota is White Butte at 3,505 feet. That's about 600 feet higher in elevation than St George, which is at 2,860 feet above sea level. Most of the state of North Dakota is between 1,000 and 2,000 feet above sea level. It gets warm fast.

I've caught wipers, stripers, white bass, largemouth, smallmouth, bluegill, perch, and walleyes. They all have their good points, but none of them are perfect.

Why have forage that competes with trout (which are native to the waters of the state, and are easier to maintain) when it produces marginal fishing at best. Want an example? Strawberry, Scofield, Minersville, Otter Creek, Piute, Panguitch, and Kolob reservoirs. Each and EVERY one of these waters have produced great fishing when they were poisoned and the chubs or perch or whatever invasive species was eradicated. When the chubs or perch or whatever else comes back, the fishing declines. Both the number of fish caught, and the average size of fish caught. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. Somebody always thinks that the fishing gets better if there are minnows in Scofield so the fish can get big. It hasn't worked that way yet. The tigers will help, but if you really wanted Scofield to make a comeback, you'd poison it. If you could keep the chubs out, you'd have a good fishery again.
