I do the best in the Spring and Fall with some summer and winter...they are always there.
You can fish them with a fast sinking line in which you drop the flies down and slowly bring them up. Similar to Jigging
Or you can fish a floating line with a long enough leader to get you within a foot of the bottom (sonar being very helpful on both this style). Plus an indicator to suspend it off the bottom.
Or take a guess of depth is fishing off a shore line.
As to where,...anywhere. I might add, I used a Red Chironomid with red bead and black wire rib on a 9' leader with the indicator set at 8' on the snake river and landed a 19" Small Mouth.
As for material, there is allot of choices, but most mine are Thread, Beads (preferably Tungsten) wire, peacock, Mylar (Pearl) and White antron or Ostrich.
